To understand gold is to probe the nature of beauty, the measurement of value and how, in a transient world, the eternal is in our midst. In her new series, Huang Dan playfully references the use of gold in hagiography, its ubiquity in Orthodox iconography, and its later contemporary art manifestations by artists such as Gustav Klimt. Where gold was used as a background, bathing the mortal in the shimmering light of heavenly rays, she instead places gold centre stage. Gold shifts from being a medium, and becomes the depiction, the very object which is being painted. In this scenario, the horses, the rabbits, the monkeys become the vehicles of gold.
