Xu Hongfei often portray his Chubby Women sculptures as active and in motion. The idea of a woman being beautiful because she is in motion is a fairly new idea. This goes against the female ideal for several decades which was soft, dependent and domesticated. In some sculptures, the artist places his female figure next to structures which imply mechanization and function. Women are shown inside or interacting with structures which by its very nature implies movement, such as wheels, coils, staircases. Ode to Joy (2019) is a reflection of this, as the chubby woman is riding a bicycle with gestural movement. One of the wheels of the bicycle is on the surface of the ground, while the other is in mid-air. This makes the chubby woman not only looks suspended and athletic. On the other hand, the Chubby Woman in A Golden Dance (2019) is also seen in motion. The female is engaging be engaging in a lighthearted celebratory dance with a pig. The artist made this artwork during and for the Year of Pig. The pig symbolises prosperity, well-being, enjoyment and abundance. The similar poses between the pig and woman suggest that they share these positive connotations. In another work, Blossoming June (2018), three woman are running on a bed of flowers. Their gestures and expressions convey human passion and positivity. The name of this artwork is based on the nickname of Guangzhou, “Huacheng” which means city of flowers. In this city, there are perennial blossoms on the streets, with flower fairs and markets, which is said to have taken place during the Ming Dynasty. By conveying the three chubby figures running in “Huacheng”, the artist reinforces the idea that the figures themselves are blossoming and are in good shape and health.
