Ding Beili is an associate professor at the Chinese Painting Department of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts. Her ink paintings are influenced by the aesthetics of old movies and film photography. She allows her ink to infiltrate and diffuse on the mature Xuan paper to depict the distant and ethereal scenery such as mountain and sea. The image of her work seems to be minimal, visually close to the lens of virtual focus, the white space permeated with transparent air, seemingly foggy. In Ding’s artwork, the medium and the theme are well synethized. With years of study and experimentation, the physical characteristics of the paper and ink are manipulated to the most subtle and outstanding level.
