Yang Xun was born in Chongqing in 1981. He graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 2005. Since graduation, Yang Xun has participated in many exhibitions at home and abroad and is considered to be one of the most original painters of his generation. Currently living and working in Beijing, Yang Xun’s sophistication in depicting the delicate changes in objects under the light and shade has earned him much acclamation. His previous works often depict the landscape of the garden in the night, the stage figures and curtains under the spotlights. Inspired and influenced by Ma Yuan “Water Maps”, Yang Xun turned from figurative material to portraying the sea with more vivid colours. The work included in the exhibition is the first sea paintings completed by the artist in 2016. The entity of the tableau is like an intact sea surface. It is rich and serene. The artist did not depict lineal horizon lines nor provide an identifiable perspective. This work marks Yang’s artistic transformation from the traditional narrative to a more figurative and somewhat abstract way of painting.
