Cheng learns Chinese painting when he was small, but his training was far from orthodox. Cheng keep incorporate images from Chinese paintings into his works after he graduated. After discovering the book "lui's solution" Cheng insist on imitate it's content regularly. Chinese painting is basically a practice of "copying from paper to paper". To Cheng this practice is a repay to the collective wisdom of Chinese painting.
"The Lui’s Solution" is the latest project of this series, it originated from an encyclopedia of more than 900 Chinese medicines from the Ming dynasty, under categories such as minerals, herbs, beast, grains and human. Cheng imitates and composes these images with dubious description from the internet.
Cheng uses lines to observe, depict and hence represent the artist’s inner-self. The line is a calm calculation by the artist. The line is a very calm calculation by the artist. Images and writing are being carefully put into the canvas to create associations, the artist continuously enlarge these conjunctions until the painting reaches its harmony.
