Inspired by indigenous Hong Kong plants, Sophie Cheung seeks facets of uniqueness and character in tone, angle and shape. The natural features call to mind ink brushstrokes, clouds of smoke, raging fires, and are all directly reflected in the making of Eternal Colour. The colours themselves are sourced from Ming Pao, a Hong Kong newspaper which she had been harnessing in her artworks prior to her departure for London. In a nod to traditional Chinese pigments, the blues and greens of the advertising take on a more turquoise hue. After returning from London, the commentary and selectivity of Hong Kong journalism underlined to her the difference in international perspective. During the creation of this piece, she began to actively place herself in the midst of the colour, history and culture of the journey of ink itself. Eternal Colour reflects this exploration of the artistic narrative, plants and her own state of mind.
